          Abstract

ABSTRACT In this contribution, we focus on the relationship between the gothic, crime fiction, and sexual gender. We pick up Cortázar’s expression when referring to the Gothic, “it’s like a slightly more contaminating stain” because it continues to resonate, especially in films, in series, existing there as the substrate of crime fiction, and in the narrative currently being published. We want to emphasize that our main definition regarding crime fiction is that it exhibits a “significant matrix of the functioning of the world and the search for truth” (Piglia, 1993, p. 101). With that premise, the question then is, what world do these novels present to us? We develop three essential aspects. On the one hand, it is a world where the horrifying prevails. On the other hand, the relationship between crime and sexual gender gives rise to two transversal topics in the works that constitute the corpus: femicide and “women who kill”. Novels read in the key to crime fiction supported by the Gothic produce a new representation of the feminine and, at the same time, present a mode of narration permeated by the sinister, the strange, and the horrifying, but above all, it is crossed by a gender perspective established by the struggles of feminism against patriarchy.
