Abstract

Resumen Canudos constituye un caso icónico en la historia de los movimientos mesiánicos de Brasil y Latinoamérica. Es una figura histórica poderosa que ha alimentado mucho del imaginario, las utopías y las prácticas socioculturales del Nordeste brasileño. El artículo analiza este movimiento de finales del siglo XIX en relación con la construcción e imaginación del Estado en Brasil y de los procesos ligados a las narrativas sobre la «modernidad». Enfoca cómo se configuraron nuevas formas de reinterpretación del caso, tanto en los contextos locales -Canudos- como en el ámbito político nacional, abriéndose nuevas avenidas de reinterpretación y producción de prácticas en la cultura popular local más reciente. Examina la manera en que estas formas de producción cultural han sido reapropiadas en los imaginarios sobre el Estado. Finalmente, se analizan los entramados entre las narrativas utópicas y el efecto que ellas tienen en las relecturas sobre el pasado-presente y en las expectativas locales sobre los futuros posibles. El estudio se realiza a partir de diversas fuentes de información: documentales, bibliográficas, fotográficas y de materiales de historia oral, principalmente.

Abstract Canudos constitutes an iconic case in the history of the messianic movements in Brazil and Latin America. It is a powerful historical figure that has fueled much of the imaginary, utopias and sociocultural practices of the Brazilian Northeast. The paper analyzes this movement at the end of the 19th century regarding the construction and imagination of the State in Brazil and the processes linked to the narratives about «modernity». It focuses on how new forms of reinterpretation of the case were configured, both in local contexts -Canudos- and in the national political sphere, opening new avenues of reinterpretation and production of practices in the most recent local popular culture. It examines how these forms of cultural production have been re-appropriated in the imaginaries about the State. Finally, the frameworks between utopian narratives and the effect they have on re-readings of the past-present and local expectations about possible futures are analyzed. The analysis is carried out from various sources of information: documentaries, bibliographical, photographic, and oral history materials, mainly.
