Bernhard Maier took his PhD in the University of Bonn in 1989 and was subsequently Reader and Professor in Celtic in the University of Aberdeen. Since 2006, he has been Professor of Religious Studies in the University of Tübingen. His books include William Robertson Smith: His Life, His Work and His Times (Tübingen: Mohr Siebeck, 2009) and Semitic Studies in Victorian Britain: A Portrait of William Wright and his World through his Letters (Würzburg: Ergon, 2011).
