An official journal of the Harriet Tubman Institute for Research on Africa and its Diasporas, the HTI Journal of African and African Diasporic Studies (JAADS) is an international, peer-reviewed, and bilingual journal that publishes research that advances our understanding of African people and African-descended people across the diaspora. The journal seeks to facilitate collaborations and engagement within and beyond the academy, encouraging contributions from both scholars and practitioners working on issues pertinent to Black communities.

The mission of the journal is to communicate significant, relevant and critical thinking on the experiences of the African and African-descended people across the Diaspora. The aim of the journal is to identify problems, share solutions and novel ideas with the community, researchers, policy and decision makers in support of Africa and its diaspora.
The journal welcomes research not limited to labour, mobility, expressive culture and belief systems, oral traditions, politics, economics, social justice, gender and sexualities, critical scholarship on science, health and wellbeing, disability, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), and humanities, focusing primarily on African and African-descended people across the diaspora.
Submissions are invited in English or in French. The journal is methodologically open, drawing on interdisciplinary insights offered by a diversity of intellectual traditions, and appealing to a diverse readership.
All submissions to the journal are reviewed using the general criteria of quality, creativity, originality, accuracy, and contribution to the field.
Some of the most interesting studies related to African and African-descended people across the Diaspora are being conducted by emerging scholars. We actively encourage such researchers to submit articles with the aim of providing them with a supportive and encouraging refereeing process.
Peer Review Statement
All submitted manuscripts are subject to initial appraisal by the Editors, and, if found suitable for further consideration, they will undergo rigorous peer review by anonymized referees.

Objectifs et champ d’application
La mission de la revue est de communiquer une pensée significative, pertinente et critique sur les expériences des Africains et des descendants d’Africains à travers la diaspora. L’objectif de la revue est d’identifier les problèmes, de partager des solutions et des idées nouvelles avec la communauté, les chercheurs, les politiques et les décideurs en faveur de l’Afrique et de sa diaspora.
La revue accueille la recherche non limitée sur le travail, la mobilité, la culture expressive et les systèmes de croyances, les traditions orales, la politique, l’économie, la justice sociale, le genre et les sexualités, l’érudition critique sur la science, la santé et le bien-être, le handicap, la science, la technique, l’ingénierie, les mathématiques (STEM) et les sciences humaines, en se concentrant principalement sur les personnes africaines et d’origine africaine à travers la diaspora.
Les soumissions sont invitées en anglais ou en français. La revue est méthodologiquement ouverte, s’appuyant sur des idées interdisciplinaires offertes par une diversité de traditions intellectuelles et attirant un lectorat diversifié.

Types of paper
The following types of contribution are published in the HTI Journal of African and African Diasporic Studies/ La Revue des études sur l'Afrique et la Diaspora Africaine:
Original articles (maximum 8,000 words inclusive of the abstract and references)
Articles present and discuss findings from a piece of original research.
Review Articles (maximum 10,000 words inclusive of the abstract and references)
Only critical review papers will be considered that provide a novel perspective and critical evaluation on topics of interest to broader JAADS readership. Manuscripts simply summarizing the current state of knowledge are not suitable.
Practice Notes (maximum 3,000 words inclusive of the abstract and references)
The practice note seeks to bridge academia and practice. It aims to provide a space for both applied researchers and practitioner insights to contribute to African and African Diaspora related issues. There should be several key insights and recommendations. All practice notes are reviewed by the editorial team and are not subject to external review by independent, anonymous referees.
Viewpoints (maximum 3,000 words inclusive of the abstract and references)
A viewpoint article presents an author’s personal views, supported by evidence, which provide contemporary insights relevant to Africa and its diaspora. Viewpoints include commentaries, interviews, field insights, event analyses, and reviews of recent books that focus on Africa and its diaspora. Viewpoint articles can map out new directions for research, practice, or policy; they can be propositional, providing new thinking on topics that is not directly based on the outputs of research projects. All viewpoints are reviewed by the editorial team and are not subject to external review by independent, anonymous referees.
Style Guidelines
The journal uses the APA citation style. For every in-text citation, there should be a full citation in the reference list and vice versa.
Reference Citations in Text
Sources should be cited in the text (i.e., the author's surname, the publication date of the work cited, and a page number if necessary). Full details should be provided in the reference list (under the heading References).
Reference List
References cited in the text of a paper must appear in a Reference List or bibliography. This list provides the information necessary to identify and retrieve each source.
Two additional pieces of information should be included for works accessed online.
2. Date: If the work is a finalized version published and dated, as in the case of a journal article, the date within the main body of the citation is enough. However, if the work is not dated and/or is subject to change, as in the case of an online encyclopedia article, include the date that you retrieved the information.
